According to a report from the Dallas Morning News, Dreien Opportunity Partners is looking to add nearly 800 apartments to The Campus at Legacy West in Plano.
Dreien purchased the former J.C. Penney campus about two years ago and has since worked to convert theproperty into a mixed-use development.
Dreien received the green light from Plano’s planning and zoning commission to develop additional buildings adjacent to the more than 1-million-square-foot office building, the report said.
Plans for the buildings still must be approved by Plano City Council before Dreien can proceed..
Dreien’s Sam Ware said that he’s working with Trammell Crow Residential and Kairoi Residential for the apartment communities, according to the report.
“This allows walkability, recruiting and many benefits to all these companies, considering 50 percent of their workforce live in multifamily projects somewhere,” Ware said.
Dreien closed on the former J.C. Penney campus on Dec. 30, 2016, for $353 million. The Dallas developer was expecting to spend more than $120 million upgrading the office space into a Class A building at the time.
J.C. Penney still leases within the multi-tenant office building, joined by operations for NTT Data.
